Student Tips: Things to do during spring break

Many students may be caught off guard by this year’s seemingly early spring break. The break commences on Saturday, Feb. 22, until Sunday, Mar. 2. Some students are headed home for relaxation, and some will go to a warmer place. Meanwhile, those staying in Houghton will be braving the winter, finding ways to make the most of the break despite the cold.

Students staying in the area can attend the CopperDog 150 Sled Dog Race in Calumet. This annual event features a 150-mile race through the Keweenaw Peninsula. The first race begins on Saturday, Feb. 28, on Scott and 5th Street in Calumet.

Students who like skiing or snowboarding and have a season pass at Mont Ripley can use this break to try out the slopes. Season pass perks allow students to get one day of free access to resorts such as Pine Mountain, the Porkies, and many other hills in the area. Students can refer to MTU’s website for more information.

Students heading home for spring break can also be an excellent opportunity to tidy up their college living spaces. Ryan Burdo, a fourth-year student at Tech, said, “For people graduating this semester, spring break can be a good time to bring home things they don’t need. This can make it easier to move back home at the end of the semester.”

Only eight weeks remain until finals after spring break. This is a good time for students to unwind before the semester’s final stretch. Students can relax, catch up on sleep, watch a movie, and reconnect with friends and family.
