WMTU unveils plans for 2025 Keweenawesomefest

Houghton hosts several local musical groups, and WMTU will be highlighting some of these groups while sponsoring Keweenawesomefest, or K-Fest for short. Around 16 bands will be featured, each with a distinct musical taste to bring to the event. Starting at 6 p.m. on Mar. 21, the festival will continue until midnight that night. K-Fest will continue on Mar. 22. The event will be held in the McArdle Theater in the Rozsa Center, unlike last year where it was held at the Lode Theater in downtown Houghton.

Dane Cucinelli, the Head of Events at WMTU, confirmed a wide range of genres to be represented, including “indie rock, jazz fusion, rock, punk and Midwest emo.” He also mentioned the possibility of some more popular bands from Marquette appearing. In Cucinelli’s words, the content will likely be, “16 hours long, and some bands may get more time than others.” Some of the big headliners from last year that could potentially make an appearance are the Dead North, Willowby, and more.

As this festival will feature many bands in search of a big break, Cucinelli made sure that getting the bands into another event was possible. “These groups have been playing house shows, and it is entirely different to play under the lights. This gives the opportunity to spotlight some bands that could potentially benefit their careers,” he stated. Students will be able to attend for free with their student ID, and others will be able to purchase a ticket at the event.

According to Cucinelli, those who cannot attend the event in person can, “hopefully [listen] on radio, definitely on Twitch.” For further information, refer to WMTU’s Facebook page with the username “WMTU 91.9FM.”
