Michigan Tech students are expected to battle one of the longest and harshest winters in the United States. Properly managing one’s mental and physical health seems difficult, but it is necessary to survive these severe winters.
Fortunately, Tech students have several opportunities to stay active outdoors during the winter. Hazel McGovern, a senior staff member at MTU’s Outdoor Adventure Program (OAP) rental center, mentions, “I love being outside, and I think that being outside is important for students’ health.” McGovern says they have snowshoe and cross-country ski rentals, which provides students with opportunities to enjoy the outdoors and stay in shape. The rental center is off Sharon Ave., next to the Michigan Tech trail parking lot. McGovern notes that most of the staff is well-versed in general trail knowledge, so students with questions about rentals or tech trails are encouraged to ask for guidance.
Maintaining a balanced diet by incorporating fruits and vegetables into your meals can help boost your immune system and replenish essential vitamins that may be lacking during the winter. Simple habits like washing your hands regularly, getting enough sleep, and staying physically active will also reduce the likelihood of getting sick in the winter.
Taking care of your physical health can lead to unintended benefits for your mental health as well. Simple steps like going outside to get natural light can help improve mood and boost mental resilience. Staying socially connected by engaging with friends, joining clubs, or participating in winter activities such as Winter Carnival can help combat feelings of isolation.
Students can also go to Michigan Tech’s Center for Mental Health and Well-being, located in the Admin Building, for additional mental health support.
