The Michigan Tech Huskies have been making noise this season. With the regular season coming to an end, the team has found its rhythm, fighting for the top spot in the CCHA and setting the stage for another deep postseason run. After a dominant sweep of Northern Michigan last weekend, the Huskies are riding a three-game winning streak. They are continuing to gain momentum as the Mason Cup playoffs come into focus.
Under the leadership of head coach Joe Shawhan, the Huskies have displayed a mix of veteran leadership and emerging talent. Freshman Elias Jansson had a standout performance against the Wildcats, netting three goals over the weekend and earning CCHA Rookie of the Week honors. Stiven Sardarian drives the offense, leading the team in points this season so far, with ten goals and 20 assists. Goaltending has delivered, with a save percentage of 0.911 on the season and securing a shutout against the Wildcats. Now sitting in third place in the CCHA standings, the Huskies remain on the hunt for the number one seed. They have proven their ability to grind out tough wins in one of college hockey’s most challenging conferences. Shawhan praised his team’s recent play, noting their discipline and structure in back-to-back victories. After the second Husky win against the Wildcats, Shawhan commended, “The guys competed tonight. I thought they stayed within a structured environment which created offense for us.”
As the regular season winds down, the Huskies are gearing up for the highly anticipated CCHA Mason Cup. The Huskies aim to get a top seed and defend last year’s championship title. Their upcoming series against second-place Augustana on Feb. 14 and 15 will be crucial for the standings, with major playoff implications on the line.
Now is the time for fans to rally behind the team, with the Mason Cup playoffs fast approaching. Whether packing the arena or tuning in from home, fan support fuels the team and brings excitement to the program. They return to action on Feb. 7 at home vs. Bemidji, so pack the SDC during Winter Carnival and shake the stands!
