The 47th President of the United States, Donald Trump, was inaugurated on Monday. He quickly signed 26 executive orders, several of which have already resulted in court challenges. Among these orders, Trump sought to terminate birthright citizenship along with establishing the Department of Government Efficiency.
On Tuesday, Trump was concerned with immigration. He issued orders to close the southern border and conduct the largest deportation effort in American history. His administration plans to use the US military for this purpose and has declared a national emergency to expedite the process. In addition to these initiatives, Trump promised a large investment in AI infrastructure. He revealed Project Stargate, a joint venture set to receive up to $500 billion from OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle over four years. This initiative aims to build AI infrastructure nationwide, creating thousands of jobs and advancing AI technology.
Wednesday, Trump focused on financial concerns. He pulled out of the Paris Agreement and reversed 78 Biden-era executive orders. In addition, he imposed a government employment moratorium, stopped diversity, equality, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, and fired 160 staff members of the National Security Council.
On Thursday, President Trump issued an executive order declassifying papers relating to the killings of President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He also announced tech-related measures, including a cryptocurrency regulation framework.
On Friday, Trump made trips to hurricane-ravaged North Carolina and wildfire-stricken Los Angeles. He faulted the previous administration’s approach to natural disasters and proposed withholding funding from California unless it modified its water regulations. Later, during the weekend, Trump began further implementing his economic policy, having begun to enact a 25% tariff on all Colombian goods in an effort to enforce his immigration restrictions as of writing.
Throughout the week, Trump delivered multiple speeches emphasizing his commitment to fulfilling his campaign pledges and reforming the US government. He has sought to exert greater influence on several agencies, chiefly by implementing a new classification of government workers known as “Schedule F,” which are subject to more authority from the executive branch than others.
