With Winter Carnival taking place next week, plenty of exciting events are on the horizon. Here are some to consider attending.
On Wednesday, Feb.5, the All-Nighter statue building will begin at 4 p.m., ending the following day at 9 a.m. along with the the month-long snow statues from the Houghton and Hancock fraternities. Attendees can walk around both on and off campus to see statue progress and check out student organizations’ activities and food booths. Around 11:15 p.m. or after the All-Star broomball game, the Laser Light Show will portray dragons, knights, and legendary sights – this year’s Carnival theme – projected on the side of Walker.
Two-kilometer cross-country ski races will be hosted on the Tech Trails at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb.6. Stage Revue is at the Rozsa Center at 7 p.m., with student-performed skits based on the Carnival theme. These skits may include college-level humor, themes of death, and mature language.
On Friday, competitors for the Tug-of-War Tournament meet at 11 a.m. at the SDC Practice Fields. Celebrity hypnotist Chris Jones will perform his comedy/hypnosis routine in the SDC wood gym around 10 p.m. after the night’s hockey game.
Dog-sled rides starting at Douglass Houghton Hall as well as horse-drawn sleigh rides starting at the Memorial Union Building, will be held 2-5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. St. Albert the Great will hold mass inside an ice chapel Friday at 5:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. and Saturday at 10 a.m. Chili is served after each session. The hockey team also competes against Bemidji State Friday at 7:07 p.m. and Saturday at 5:07 p.m. Look towards Mont Ripley after Saturday’s game to watch the Torchlight Parade and following fireworks show.
Saturday, Feb 8 features events throughout the day. Human Dog Sled Races at the SDC Practice Fields start at 10 a.m., where six people pull a homemade sled that holds four riders and one musher. From 10 a.m.-3 p.m., the library will sell used books, mining scene notecards, and Michigan Tech blankets, as well as provide free hot chocolate. At 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., Water Street Dance Milwaukee will perform cutting-edge contemporary dance for all ages in the Rozsa, using haze and flashing lights. The Awards Ceremony at 2 p.m. in the MUB Alumni Lounge will award trophies from Winter Carnival events to competition winners and celebrate the efforts of student organizations.
