The Society for Environmental Engineering has its first general meeting this month. It will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 28, at 7 p.m. in the Chemical Sciences and Engineering Building (Chem Sci) 103. The meeting will discuss the goals, project ideas and answer student’s questions. All are welcome!
This meeting will mark the first general meeting since the spring of 2024. The SEEn student organization has struggled to rebuild after most of the executive board members graduated last spring and the others stepped down from their positions. Additionally, in the last few years, there has been a general decline in the number of members.
The motivation for the organization to be brought back was by Michigan Tech’s professor, Dr. Jennifer Becker. Dr. Becker is the advisor of the SEEn student organization and is an Associate Professor for Civil, Environmental, and Geospatial Engineering. The executive board members include Lauren Willerick; President, Emily Johnson; Secretary, and Ben Harrison; Treasurer. The executive board members were influenced by Dr. Beckers’ enthusiasm, which pushed them to promote SEEn to first and second year Environmental Engineering classes last semester. Through Dr. Becker and the executive board’s effort to rebuild this organization, they believe there will be a good turnout for the first meeting. The Treasurer of SEEn, Ben Harrison, second year Environmental Engineering student, states that about 50 people joined the involvement link, which provided the executive board with optimism for a successful rebuild.
Now that the SEEn is back, the executive board members are hoping that the organization will help connect fellow environmental engineering students. Ben Harrison has high hopes of bringing people together and solidifying their organization at Michigan Tech. Limited public presence has led to first and second year Environmental Engineering students not being familiar with each other; SEEn aims to provide an essential connection between the two groups.
The Society for Environmental Engineering is welcome to anyone who wants to join. There are positions open for supportive executive board members, general members, and even a creative position open to redesign the SEEn logo.
The primary method of contact for the group to get any questions answered is to email any members of the executive board or the advisor of the organization, Dr. Becker. Emails of the current executive board and advisor are provided below.
