Basketball action heated up last weekend as both the mens and womens teams took on Saginaw Valley State University on Thursday and Wayne State on Saturday. For the women, freshman Kendall Standfest led the way for the Huskies with two 16 point games, a team high point. During Thursday’s game, SVSU would find themselves with the lead early, but a dominant second quarter by Michigan Tech, where the Huskies would outscore the Cardinals 24-8 was the difference maker. The Huskies would go on to win 84-46. Saturday’s game against Wayne State was a much tighter game, as the score was 29-25 in favor of the Huskies at the half. The Wayne State Warriors came out strong in the third quarter, outscoring the Huskies 23-14; however, Michigan Tech held on in the fourth quarter to secure the win 76-67.
As for the men, Thursday’s game against the SVSU Cardinals was a thrilling comeback win. While the Huskies would take the early lead, the Cardinals would have the lead at the half, 27-35. Michigan Tech would go on to be down by 12 at one point, before junior guard Marcus Tomashek would lead the Huskies to a 68-66 win by scoring the final 12 points, making the winning shot with just seconds left.
“We need to take care of the basketball…I don’t think the lead gets to double digits if we don’t turn it over,” Head Coach Josh Beuttner said when asked about how to control their game more moving forward. However, Saturday’s game would find the Huskies down by seven in the first half of Saturday’s game in large part due to their 11 turnovers to Wayne State’s three. Tomashek would lead the way again for the Huskies with a team high 32 points to complete the weekend sleep and beat Wayne State 74-68.
Both mens and womens teams are on the road this coming weekend as they head to Lake Superior State University on Jan. 23 and Ferris State on Jan. 25.
