January 6, 2025 marked the start of the spring semester which for many students causes an increase of stress trying to manage all of their courses. Michigan Tech has various resources to help students as the semester progresses outside of class. An anonymous Student Success Center (SSC) Coordinator gave advice for students juggling school work, “Prioritize and make time for your classes and spend time early in the week studying to make sure you can enjoy personal time later in the week”.
The Waino Wahtera Center for Student Success encourages student growth in a multitude of ways. Relationships, attitudes, values, and skills are all major development categories they help support. For students trying to juggle classes, the Wahtera Center has a vast array of tips and resources on its website. Major highlights include class expectations, being successful, note-taking, and studying. They include study plans and time management tools that allow students to map out their responsibilities and find time to succeed. The Wahtera Center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. and meetings are available upon request.
Resources Michigan Tech provides range from learning centers, professor office hours, academic advisors, counseling services, and student disability services. If you find yourself falling behind in a class, the resources are at your disposal.
Learning centers are staffed by students who have had academic success in certain academic areas. Coaching is offered by appointment or walk-in hours. Learning centers range from broader material such as the Mathematics Learning Center and the Writing Center down to specific material like the Civil, Environmental, and Geospatial Engineering Learning Center. Hours and location of each learning center can be found on The Waino Wahtera Center for Student Success webpage, as well as Michigan Tech’s webpage.
