A crowd of enthusiastic students gathered on Walker Lawn on the evening of Jan. 7 to witness Michigan Tech’s annual Broomball Drop ceremony. This ceremony kicked off the 2025 season, firmly putting last year’s weather-related challenges in the past.
The ball drop is an annual tradition that represents MTU’s unique culture, fully embracing winter and all its activities. This year’s festivities celebrate the beginning of a promising season marked by a favorable weather outlook and exceptional preparation of the rinks.
“Broomball encompasses what Tech is all about,” said Owen Resch, Broomball Committee Special Tasks Manager. “It is something that everyone at Tech has an opportunity to participate in that is both fun and inclusive.”
Unlike last year, where the lack of snow delayed the start of the season, and warm weather cut the season short, this year’s colder and snowier weather ensured the rinks were ready on time. “I came up to Houghton a week before classes started to start helping make ice. I’ve been out here working nonstop and am excited about how these rinks look,”said Greg Gaudreau, rink manager. “The long-term weather effects look good. Last year was heavily impacted by the weather; so many teams and players are excited to play; it will be a good year.”
Dean of Students Kellie Raffaelli shared her sentiments, “What excites me most about broomball is how it brings our community together,” she said, “Even if you’ve never played before, there’s always someone willing to teach you. It’s such an important part of the Husky experience.”
Other students echoed the Dean’s remarks. Madelyn Hachenski, a second-year broomball player, encourages newcomers, stating, “Don’t miss out; most people who don’t play regret it later.”
The Huskies Pep Band energized the crowd as Blizzard T. Husky dropped the ball on center ice, officially commencing the anticipated 2025 broomball season. The game was an exciting matchup between two of last year’s top teams, Left Curve Gang and IV Ever and Always. Left Curve Gang dominated the game, securing an impressive 12-0 victory.
