Honoring MLK at Michigan Tech: A day of reflection and action

Michigan Technological University will commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 20, with a series of events emphasizing reflection, education, and community engagement. Students will have the day off, but the day is far more significant than a break.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is observed on the third Monday of every January. It honors the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a leader in the Civil Rights Movement. Known for his commitment to nonviolent activism, MLK Jr. fought against racial segregation and inequality. MLK Jr. gave the famous “I Have a Dream” speech in August of 1963 which inspired the Civil Rights Act, a cornerstone in American culture.

Organized by the  CDI, this year’s celebration centers on the theme of “Beloved Communities”, inspired by Dr. King’s vision of equity and unity. “Martin Luther King Jr. is one of the most influential figures in American history,” said Julia Keleher, Director for Diversity and Inclusion. “It’s important to not only remember his legacy and impact on society but also to continue his work toward equity for all communities. This day is about celebrating, lifting others, and creating spaces where everyone belongs, regardless of their identities.”

The day’s events kick off at 10 a.m. with the MLK brunch in the MUB. There will be food, live music from the Workshop Brass Band, and a Keynote address by Schwartzen Precil. At 12 p.m., The Van Pelt and Opie Library will then host a Prayer Vigil where religious communities on campus alongside individuals will read excerpts from MLK Jr.’s literature.

The celebration will conclude with a peace march at 1 p.m., starting at the Husky Statue. Students, faculty, and community members will march across campus to demonstrate solidarity and commitment to social justice. Keleher emphasized the importance of student involvement, “MLK Day is a unique chance to explore Dr. King’s life and legacy while reflecting on how we can contribute to a more just society. It’s about learning, growing, and creating meaningful connections with others.”
