Winter Carnival is approaching quickly next month with lots of fun and exciting events that students and community members alike can look forward to. This year’s festivities, themed “Dragons, Knights, & Legendary Sights,” will start on Feb. 5 and continue through the weekend until Feb. 8.
With all the events planned, students can expect a weekend full of fun activities to celebrate the snowy campus that we call home. Whether you like to explore the outdoors or stay curled up inside, this year’s carnival has something to offer for everyone.
The biggest thing to look forward to this Winter Carnival is the snow statues. This year, Blue Key had a large increase in the number of organizations looking to complete month-long statues, meaning students can expect to see more of these works than in years prior.
There are many other activities planned outside of the statues to get community members and students outside, such as free dog sled rides the Friday and Saturday of the event, as well as a variety of snow-themed sport events that students can participate in through their respective clubs or dorm halls in the days leading up to Winter Carnival.
Other events such as the Stage Revue, occurring the night of Feb. 6, give the community the opportunity to immerse themselves in this year’s theme while staying indoors through a variety of short productions put on by the different student organizations of Michigan Tech.
New events such as the laser light show occurring Feb. 5 during all-nighter also present a lot of excitement for this year’s carnival.
To conclude, the festivities’ community members will be able to look across the Portage to watch the annual torchlight parade and fireworks at Mount Ripley.
“We get to celebrate in a way no other university does,” Sklyer Spitzley, the current Blue Key President, stated, “It just brings everyone together”
All the events listed and more can be found on Blue Key’s Winter Carnival website. Students can expect schedules of the events to be posted around campus the week leading up to the kickoff of the festivities on Wednesday.
