Husky Shuttles see new routes

Michigan Tech has updated its Husky Shuttle routes this semester after the yellow school buses previously used for the service were decommissioned. The switch to smaller “mini-coach” buses has led to route adjustments aimed at improving capacity and reliability while addressing the transportation needs of students.

Sean Conners, Transportation Operations Manager, noted that the reduced capacity of the new buses made it difficult to handle peak ridership, especially for students commuting to and from Daniel Heights. Adjustments were made to improve the flow of passengers during high-demand times, such as the beginning and end of the school day.

The Hancock Shuttle no longer runs two routes but one loop. The bus now routes to Pat’s Foods and the Keweenaw Co-op in Hancock, and stops at Daniel Heights during its return to Houghton, easing congestion on other routes. Campus shuttles have added new stops on Cliff Drive and Sharon Avenue. Adjustments for winter safety rerouted shuttles along Lincoln Drive to avoid steep hills. The stop at the hospital in Hancock was discontinued due to low usage. If students need to reach the hospital, contact MTU Public Safety for options.

Conners noted that further adjustments may be made during the semester break to address lingering concerns, such as the long travel times for some Hancock stops. Transportation Services is committed to maintaining flexibility as they monitor feedback and usage.

For those who have concerns or feedback about the route, Connors urges riders to be on the lookout for surveys on the TripShot app or reach out to Transportation Services at parking@mtu.edu with any feedback, regardless of whether it is good or bad.
