Getting hired for MTU Students

If you’re still looking for work, don’t stress—many students and graduates are in the same boat, and plenty of resources are available to help you land the right opportunity. Whether you’re searching for a part-time job, internship, or full-time position, it’s important to use a combination of tools and strategies to stay proactive and organized in your search.

For Michigan Tech students, you already have a major advantage: you’re part of a community known for its intelligence, innovation, and work ethic. Employers recognize the value of an MTU education, so use that to your benefit as you navigate the job market.

Our campus Career Services office is a great place to start. They provide resume reviews, mock interviews, career fairs, and networking events, all designed to help students stand out to potential employers. You can even schedule an appointment with a career advisor to get personalized advice on your job hunt. The office also has exclusive job boards and connections with employers who are actively looking to hire MTU students and graduates.

LinkedIn is another useful tool. It’s more than just a networking site—it’s your digital resume and professional portfolio. Make sure your profile is polished and complete, including a high-quality photo, a compelling summary, and a list of your skills and accomplishments. Connect with professors, classmates, and professionals in your field of interest, and don’t hesitate to reach out to people for advice or informational interviews. LinkedIn also offers job postings tailored to your preferences and the option to display an “Open to Work” badge to increase your visibility to recruiters.

Job search platforms like Indeed are also valuable. Create a profile, upload your resume, and set up job alerts to be notified when positions matching your interests are posted. Take time to tailor your applications to specific job descriptions by incorporating relevant keywords, which can help ensure your resume gets noticed.

Networking is another powerful tool in your search. Attend career fairs, alumni events, and industry meet-ups. Even a brief conversation or an informational coffee chat can open doors to opportunities you hadn’t considered. With the problem-solving mindset and technical skills MTU students are known for, you’re already well-prepared to stand out. Stay patient, consistent, and open to possibilities—with the right effort, you’ll find the perfect opportunity.
