Spring Break is coming up in six weeks, and there are a few things to keep in mind.
To start, the Undergraduate Student Government (USG) will set up three break buses that carry students to and from campus, two of which travel to lower Michigan, and the other to Chicago through Wisconsin.
Students are encouraged to purchase tickets early because there are a limited number of seats. Konraad VanDyke, the USG Break Bus Coordinator, told The Lode, “tickets typically sell out for Lower Michigan within a day or two while Wisconsin/Chicago sells out in about a week.”
Buses leave Saturday, Feb. 22 at 8:00 a.m. and will both make four pre-planned stops. The buses will then pick up students from the same stops on Saturday, Mar. 1 in the morning and return to campus. The Lower Michigan bus will cost $153.00 plus tax and the Wisconsin/Chicago bus will cost $145.50 plus tax. More information about the trip, stops, and updates can be found on the USG website: usg.mtu.edu/break-bus/.
Michigan Tech also has opportunities for studying abroad which happen during Spring Break. These programs are generally led by Michigan Tech faculty, and are built around two to three credit classes and labs. Unfortunately, study abroad opportunities in 2025 are now closed for applications.
There are two study-abroad options this year. The first is “Mexico: Development and Local Communities,” in which students learn about how communities in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula are dealing with an explosion in tourism and investments. Students enroll in “SS 3960 Cultural Immersion,” which can be two or three credits, and have the option of taking “PE 0210 Open Water Swimming,” which is a half-credit course.
The second opportunity is the “Bahamas: Tropical Island Biology,” where students will complete a two-credit course “as a broad survey of the biology and ecology of tropical island plant and animal communities in marine and terrestrial systems,” according to the study abroad website.
