Michigan Tech’s Winter Carnival will kick off this year with the annual All Nighter on Feb. 5 with the theme of Dragons, Knights, and Legendary Sights. Organized by the Blue Key National Honor Society, Winter Carnival celebrates the large amounts of snowfall experienced in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula through the building of snow statues, outdoor games, and many student-organized activities.
This year’s theme was voted for based on what Blue Key thought would be the most successful with students. The theme is incorporated into all statues, stage revue, and royalty events. Students participating in these events are evaluated based on how much the theme is showcased in their creations.
“During the All Nighter, Campus comes alive,” wrote Blue Key Honor Society President Skyler Spitzley. “There is food, dances, and snow statues all built during the All Nighter.”
Students can participate with friends, halls, or campus organizations to build an All Nighter snow statue or a month-long statue throughout January. Additional All Nighter events include ice bowling, human dog sled races, snow volleyball, and downhill and cross-country skiing.
The Stage Revue competition is another popular Winter Carnival event, which will take place on Feb. 6 at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts. “I highly recommend Stage Revue for all first years,” wrote Spitzley. “It’s so much fun and it’s hilarious to see what kinds of comedic skits students come up with to showcase to their peers.”
The Saturday before Winter Carnival Weekend will also see the Winter Carnival Royalty Coronation. The event will be held at the Rozsa Center and live-streamed on the Michigan Tech YouTube page starting at 6:45 p.m. The Coronation is an event that serves to recognize students for their involvement within the Michigan Tech community by awarding a finalist the title of “Royal Majesty.”
Additional activities to look forward to throughout Winter Carnival include the All-Star Broomball Game, Hockey Game Series, a dance performance at the Rozsa, a comedian, snowball, dog sled, sleigh rides, and the Torchlight Parade and fireworks.
“Blue Key is excited to have a laser light show to be showcased after the All-Star Broomball Game,” wrote Spitzley. “It’s customized to our theme of Dragons, Knights, & Legendary Sights.”
