Students for Sustainability (S4S) is an organization dedicated to helping students incorporate sustainable practices into their everyday lives. The club’s meetings are action-based with current projects including semi-annual clothing swaps, a bottle brick bench to be displayed in the library, and an ongoing composting program.
“We partner with the Canterbury House and a local farm called Apple Acres Farm,” said club president Lily Williston. “People will just bring their compost to the Canterbury House and every Sunday we bring it over to the farm and their chickens eat it. It’s a way to help divert food waste from landfills.”
S4S also collaborates with other campus sustainability organizations such as the Sustainability Demonstration House, Keweenaw Youth for Climate Action, and Green Campus Enterprise to amplify the impact of their green initiatives.
Beyond promoting environmental practices, the club aims to foster a welcoming community for sustainability-minded individuals. “We try to do community based events,” said Williston. “We like to have fun movie nights, sustainable craft nights, and sometimes we do clothing mending events.”
If you are a member of the Michigan Tech community who is passionate, interested, or willing to learn about sustainable campus living, you can join the club’s weekly meetings in Fisher 125. The next meeting will be on Thursday, Nov. 21 at 6 p.m., where the club will be hosting a holiday themed sustainable craft night.
