The Graduate Student Government (GSG) convened on Tuesday, Nov. 12, addressing constitutional amendments, upcoming elections, and university policy discussions.
Key topics included the Berlin Wall event and a call by representatives for a response from the university. Graduate School Dean Dr. Will Cantrell reiterated that without a specific, targeted, actionable threat the university can not act. The representatives expressed frustration that the Board of Trustees will not hear their grievances on the issue of hate speech and highlighted an incident where admin forced a department to rescind their statement concerning this speech last year.
Additionally, a new Equipment Finder tool by the Vice President for Research’s Office was introduced. It allows students to search research equipment by function, name, or location, with most items photographed.
Two roles are up for election at the next meeting: incumbent President Lauren Sprague seeks re-election, and the social chair position is open. Graduate students are encouraged to reach out to their departmental representatives or the GSG secretary to nominate candidates before Nov. 22.
GSG leadership also reminded members of the upcoming Student Commission meeting on Nov. 21 at 4 p.m. in MUB Ballroom A1. Representatives from the Athletics and Student Billing departments will present updates and take questions.
The final meeting of the semester is scheduled for Dec. 3 at 5:15 p.m. in EERC 100.
