The MTU Hockey Team has started out their season 6-2, with both losses falling to Clarkston. This leaves eight remaining games until the Great Lakes Invitational (GLI), and the Huskies are looking like they will retain priority seeding. The CCHA preseason coaches poll had the Huskies pulling second in the conference. Due to their performance at the beginning of the season, the poll is looking quite accurate, as they are now expected to secure first place.
Must-see games prior to the GLI will be back-to-back games against the Bemidji State Beavers the week of Mid-Year Commencement, Dec. 13. The Huskies have been playing Bimidji consistently over the last few years and there is an opportunity for a sweep in 2024. However, that same coaches poll had the Beavers matching the Huskies through the regular season. They are 5-6, hovering around the middle of the pack in the CCHA.
The GLI will begin on Dec. 29, with the Huskies to face off against the Western Michigan Broncos. The rest of the games are to be determined through tournament elimination. With a historic 11-5 record against the Broncos and a hot start to their season, the Husky hopes for a deep run into the GLI are looking very promising as of now. We will be looking forward to seeing what coach Shawhan and the Huskies can do leading up to the GLI as a 14-2 record, although quite hopeful, is well within their grasp.
