Make your expertise unique with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BS) in chemistry. Michigan Tech’s Department of Chemistry has two differing programs depending on what you are looking into for a career path. This can be anything from getting a law degree to working in pharmacy.
The BS degree is more comparable with a typical engineering degree with higher-level math and science courses. The BA degree is more of a “create your own adventure” degree according to Susan Liebau, Director for the Chemistry Learning Center. The main distinction is that the BS only has 18 free electives compared to the BA’s 39. The BS can have concentrations added to it, but they are added credits and not built into the curriculum. The most common additions to the BA degree are pre-health or pre-law tracks. Liebau says these can give chemistry experience while focusing on the relevance to the field. This can be a leg up on most graduates and open other doors that others would not have the opportunity to pursue.
Graduates have gone on to continue their education in different graduate and doctoral degrees or enter the workforce in various fields including education, research, and technical communication.
