Friends of Michigan Tech Library biannual book sale

After experiencing great success with their Winter Carnival book sale, the Friends of the Michigan Tech Library is hosting another on April 6 and 7. The sale will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, April 6, and will be open to members only. At this time, memberships will be for sale for $20 at the door. The general book sale, open to the public, will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 7. This year, the sale will be held in the Memorial Union Building (MUB) Ballroom on the second floor.

The Friends of the Michigan Tech Library originally formed in 1995 in order to benefit the Van Pelt and Opie Library. Members of the organization volunteer to collect books year-round for the biannual sales. The proceeds from these sales, as well as from the sale shelf in the library year-round, go towards funding a summer internship in the University Archives, library technology, and travel scholarships. This year, the Friends were able to bring study cubicles to the third floor of the library as a product of their fundraising efforts.

The organization’s other fundraising initiatives have included collaboration with Tadych’s Econofoods, where shoppers can collect their receipts and drop them in the collection box at the library. Through its receipt rebate program, Econofoods donates to the Friends one percent of the sum of all receipts collected. Those interested in helping with this initiative are encouraged to start their own collection boxes. Receipts can be sent via campus mail to Amy Hughes at the Lakeshore Center.

Another way that community members are encouraged to help the library is by donating gently used books, DVDs and CDs. These can be placed in the Friends book drop located in the library vestibule (if you have too many books to put them in the book drop, they can also be brought to the service desk).
