All about the fun: Respawn Laser Tag

Huskies had their strategy and stealth caps on as they demonstrated some on-target shooting skills at the laser tag event on Saturday, March 24. Thanks to the efforts of the Graduate Student Government (GSG) of Michigan Tech and the Respawn Tactical Laser Tag at the Copper Country Mall, the GSG was able to host yet another round of its highly popular annual event.

The Respawn Tactical Laser Tag center is a fun-lover’s delight as it offers arenas and equipment for most of the popular laser tag games, including King of the Hill, Protect the VIP and Capture the Flag, among others. As is always the case with any GSG event, laser tag last weekend was highly organized and well-managed, ensuring all participants had an awesome time. Special shuttle arrangements were made for those who needed a ride, and snacks, including pizzas and coke, were also arranged for the participants. Who wouldn’t like some delicious pizza after all that draining shooting and strategizing? The GSG’s meticulous planning was very well complemented by the warmth and resourcefulness of Respawn’s staff. They were efficient in providing all the necessary safety instructions and made sure the participants had a great overall experience.

Aashay Thatte, a graduate student in the electrical department at Tech and a fellow writer with the Lode, explained, “GSG did an excellent job at organizing everything right from rides to snacks. We hardly had any time to breathe while we were at the Respawn because we always had to be agile in defending ourselves, watching our and the team’s backs and were constantly anticipating the opponent’s move. It was exciting, challenging and extremely fun,” he said.

Another graduate student, this time from the mechanical department, Shubham Jain seemed all too delighted about his team’s efforts. “My team emerged victorious for the King of the Hill event. We had a forgettable defeat in one of our initial games but we came back real hard, showed some character and successfully defended our hill. There were some casualties involved, none fatal though,” he joked, emulating a military-style spokesperson.

King of the Hill, one of the games we played, includes a team capturing and defending a central point in the arena to acquire the highest possible score. The team that controls the point for the allotted amount of time wins the game. The laser tag game put to use some skills developed through computer games like the popular Counter Strike and Call of Duty games, making all the gaming enthusiasts believe they had gleaned some real-world skills from those lengthy gaming sessions. They had their own validation — Nirvana indeed!

All the participants were highly appreciative of the GSG’s efforts for making all of this possible at highly discounted rates, and most of the attendees are now considering at least a session every month. Although birthday parties, team building events and bachelor parties are common occasions for an exciting round of laser tag, it is also an excellent activity to just bring your friends, young or old, work in teams and have a refreshing experience. Respawn Tactical Laser Tag has on-site games based on availability, online booking and even affordable membership plans for those who realize once just won’t be enough. Laser tag brings video games to reality and is definitely something that everyone should try at least once.
