After a 2-15-1 season in 2025, the Michigan Tech women’s soccer team started their season looking to show how a year’s worth of improvement and development results on the field. They started their season on Aug. 28. As of Sep. 5, they are 0-4, with their most recent loss to Cedarville University, of 0-3.
Despite these early losses, the team still has high confidence that they can bounce back even stronger under the guidance of Head Coach Melissa Kuhar. Coach Kuhar is starting her third-year coaching the Michigan Tech women’s soccer team. “I am excited to see what our team can do on the field and the growth we can show from last year to now,” Kuhar said. “We are a super tight group off the field, and our culture is in a good place, so I am excited to see the growth and strides we can make in conference play. We have the talent; we just must prepare every day.”
According to GLIAC’s preseason poll, they are a clear underdog this year with 13 votes; the highest being Grand Valley State with 81 votes. The team’s preparation and practice are ready to prove those voters wrong. Returning this year are two All-GLIAC Honorable Mention recipients: Allison Millina in 2025 and Olivia Gette in 2024.
One of the biggest changes from last year is experience. The Huskies had 12 freshmen on the roster last year, many of whom saw significant playing time. Injuries last season were another thorn in their side, but with the new season they are healthier than ever. Kuhar said, “I am excited for the possibilities we have in front of us this year. We have experienced a lot of growth both culturally as well as on the field, and the girls are eager to finally win some games. From the moment I started at Tech, I have worked to change the style of play and the culture within the team to be something we can be proud of. The girls have bought in fully, and now is the year to showcase our growth. We play in one of the toughest conferences for women’s soccer at this level, and our non-conference is also packed with tough opponents. Every game is going to be a huge battle, but I believe our team is ready for whatever comes their way, as long as they do it together!”
With GLIAC conference play approaching, Michigan Tech has the chance to show their preparation and progress against the teams that were polled higher than them. Despite coming off a difficult season last year and having a last-place preseason projection, the Huskies seem more confident than ever to prove everyone wrong. Their next game is at home on Sep. 11 against Saginaw Valley State University.
