Michigan Tech women’s basketball will start its 2026 season with a new Head Coach, Eric Gruber. Gruber was selected as the tenth head coach in the program’s history. This will be his first college head-coaching position, but he brings experience from all levels of the NCAA.

Gruber spent his last three seasons as an assistant coach at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. During that time, Gruber turned around the program at SIUE from five wins in the 2023-24 season to 16 wins in 2025-26. The Cougars finished their final season with a 16-16 record, where they advanced to the quarterfinals during the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament.

Aside from his coaching time at SIUE, Gruber also gained experience at Wisconsin Parkside in 2022-23, finishing third in the GLIAC; at Coe College in 2020-21, and his most successful season was at Loras College in 2019-20, when they finished with a record of 25-4 and advanced to the NCAA Division III Sweet 16.

During his press release with Michigan Tech, Gruber stated his plan to get to the top of the GLIAC, which would include the need to recruit players that can compete at that level to match the size, physicality, speed, and style of those teams. He also mentioned that he would like to hit Wisconsin harder for recruiting.

Last year, Tech finished the 2025-26 women’s basketball season with a 16-13 overall record. The Huskies went 10-10 in conference games and placed fifth in the GLIAC. They qualified for the GLIAC Tournament, but lost to Northern Michigan in the quarterfinals. Ella Mason and Alyssa Wypych earned Second-Team All-GLIAC honors. The season was an improvement from Tech’s 12-17 record the year before.
