If you feel like you aren’t getting the sleep you need but still spending a lot of time in bed, then consider attending the Substances and Sleep seminar. This event will happen on Jan. 20 at 4 p.m. in the MUB Alumni Lounge. The Student Mental Health and Well-being staff, Josh Carlson and Sarah Woodruff, will present how substances such as cannabis, nicotine, and alcohol negatively affect sleep quality.

This presentation will go beyond how drugs affect sleep and talk further about how they can affect attention and energy during the day, and give solutions. Additionally, this session will highlight typical things students do that affect their sleep quality. When asked how this session could resonate with students, Carlson replied, “This session is designed to help students better understand habits that may be getting in the way of feeling rested and functioning at their best.” This presentation is also backed with facts from the Healthy Minds Study and the National College Health Assessment which show that many MTU students struggle with both the quality and quantity of their sleep.

This presentation comes with free snacks and it also counts towards HuskyGOLD. Additionally, Carlson wanted to make it known to those interested that this is “a low-pressure, informative session, and that students don’t need prior knowledge but rather curiosity about how their daily choices may be affecting their sleep.”

If you are interested in improving your mental health or sleep schedule, consider attending the Substances and Sleep presentation. For more information, go to Involvement Link to RSVP and to see all the information associated with the event.
