Women’s Basketball Opener vs Michigan State

Over the week, an opening match between the women’s basketball teams at Michigan Technological University and Michigan State University took place. The game took place on Oct. 22 and was held at Michigan State. It was a one-sided battle, with Michigan State taking the game 101 to 58, with most of Michigan State’s points being scored in the first half. Michigan Tech was able to stabilize during the second half and even score more points than Michigan State during the third quarter.

Head coach Samantha Clayton gave some insight into what may have happened. She said, “Michigan State is a really physical team that turned up the pressure early and forced us into some turnovers and sped-up shots.” Clayton also said that she was proud that they did not give up and were able to hold them in the second half. “Once we slowed ourselves down, we were able to outscore them in the second half and hold them to 36 points,” Overall, she was proud of the strong effort that Tech still put forward. “I’m really proud of how we continued to play hard and bring energy for a full 40 minutes.”

During the match, Ella Mason and Kendall Standfest were able to make some big offensive plays to hold Michigan State to those 36 points. Aubrey Johnson also brought a strong performance and was able to bring good plays on both sides of the ball.
